Guilherme Bomfim Barreiros 1894-1973 Engineer and photographer |
Guilherme Bomfim Barreiros, the youngest son of Luís José de Brito Barreiros and Leonor Maria Bomfim Barreiros, was born in the parish of Bonfim, Porto, on 6 December 1894.
He studied Civil Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto, in 1926.
It is not known where he worked before being admitted to the City Council of Porto, only that he worked with his brother António Bomfim Barreiros, in particular in a project on for the expansion of roads in Trofa.
On 16 June 1924 he began working for the Municipality of Porto, and retired after 40 years of service on reaching the age limit. While working for the Municipality, the headed the Department of Urban Buildings and Improvement Works and was part of several commissions, for e.g., for the evaluation of derelict buildings and the evaluation of the new Cold Fish Stores. He was particularly involved in the construction of new housing districts, as provided in the Improvement Plan and promoted in the 50s and 60s, as well as in the survey of land and earthworks for the Airport of Porto, in Pedras Rubras.
Guilherme Bomfim Barreiros was an amateur photographer with valuable work to his name. He surveyed the heritage of Porto and of other regions in the country. He authored, among other works, "Janelas Portuguesas" (1959). Along with J. A. Pinto Ferreira, in 1950 he published "Aspetos arqueológicos e artísticos da cidade do Porto". He also authored the photo documentary for "Ferros Forjados do Porto: conferências", by Artur de Magalhães Basto, António Cruz and Carlos Ramos (1955). The Municipal historical Archive of Porto currently contains the collection of his works "Arquivo Bomfim Barreiros" (1920-1970), consisting in about 10 000 of his own photographs, in different sizes.
Guilherme Bomfim Barreiros was a learned man and a lover of music; he was a member of the Orfeão of Porto and of Juventude Musical Portuguesa. He also belonged to the Portuguese Association of Engineers (elected member in 1938). The Porto Municipal Council awarded him the Commendation of the Order of Prince Henrique, by appointment of 15 June 1964.
He died in Porto in 1973.
